Axel Obiger

“Axel Obiger” opened in september 2009 at Brunnenstraße 29 in Berlin Mitte as space for contemporary art. In addition to ten dialogue shows and two curated group shows a year, Axel Obiger presents a supporting program of performances, lectures, discussions and artist talks. Collaboration with guest artists, who are staged in an open form of dialogue with one Axel Obiger artist, is one key aspect. In this way, several artistic contexts and methods of working are elucidated in order to intensify the exchange between different positions. Axel Obiger is tracing scientific discourses in our group shows and open-ended experiments on issues such as burnout, sociological icons in body and language, consumption, authorship and identity. Axel Obiger exclusively shows contemporary work.

Who is Axel Obiger?

Axel Obiger is a fictitious gallerist from Austria. The project-space “Axel Obiger” functions as an artwork itself, questioning role models and mechanisms of the art system. The topic of the fictitious gallerist is taken up regularly: On the Preview artfair in 2009 visitors could listen to his voice in an radio-interview, in 2011 we showed artists from his watchlist and in 2015 we showcase his private collection. In 2017 we invited Artists to show their „Portrait“ of Axel Obiger. Located in central Berlin, we present 12 exhibitions per year in different formats: Dialogue shows of one member and one guest artist, topical group shows and satellite shows realised by invited curators.
