Oppression, racism, violence, inequality and poverty: With a camera in his hand and his humanitarian view of the world, Gordon Parks became one of the most important and critical chroniclers of American society. He worked actively for political issues that today have lost none of their explosiveness. At the same time, he worked for magazines like Vogue or Life. From today on, C/O Berlin dedicates this fascinating simultaneity of glamour and misery a retrospective.

Three exhibitions at once will open tonight, 7pm at C/O Berlin located in the Amerika Haus: In “Out of Camp” Danish photographer Adam Jeppesen shows impressing images of his journey of 487 days from the north pole to the Antarctic. Of course, just like himself the pictures are not left without traces. A completely different form of documentation is shown at the installation “Poppy – Trails of Afghan Heroin“, for which Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong followed the trails of heroin along the Silk Road. The third exhibition “Talents 38” honors the nonconformist up-and-coming photographer Sasha Kurmaz, whose works are accompanied by texts from Svea Bräunert. Likewise you should save the date 9 SEP, when C/O Berlin will open “I am You” with selected works from Gordon Parks.

Then you shouldn’t miss this opportunity: Today at 7pm the exhibition 'To the Son of Man Who Ate the Scroll’ by Warsaw-born artist Goshka Macuga will open its doors. There, amidst the octagon, the human-like hybrid will address existential themes by quoting from science, film, literature and politics and will provide the audience plenty to talk about. Because even in 2016 the relationship between man and machine is affected by skepticism and curiosity, so there is one more reason to face this complex tension at Schinkel Pavillon.
Tomorrow evening at 7pm Hamburger Bahnhof is opening a wide-ranging exhibition about the in the art world not decreasing theme of capitalism. Main and starting point thereby is the work The Capital Space 1970–1977 by Joseph Beuys, which the artist made for the Venice Biennale in 1980. The work marks his thoughts on the creative potential of human beings at the centre of economic thought. Suitable for the theme the exhibition leads whimsically and essayistically through a variety of media and centuries: from Rihanna to Andy Warhol different points of views are illuminated. The exhibition will be on show during Berlin Art Week.
