The exhibition ›Haus der Statistik—Modell kooperativer Stadtentwicklung‹ marks the launch of the artistic prototypes of the project Statista at Haus der Statistik at Alexanderplatz. The building complex that has been empty for more than 10 years is opening up to the public again and the first of a total 30 artistic prototypes are beginning to fill the ground floor with life.
The exhibition illustrates the development history of the project since 2015 and its collective principles. In September 2015 during Berlin Art Week, a Berlin initiative for artist studios tried to prevent the sale of the building to investors and its demolition with an art campaign. The group installed a big banner on the façade of the building claiming that spaces for art, education and social projects are about to be built at the complex and raising public awareness about the future of the building. The campaign achieved an immediate impact resulting in the formation of an alliance of diverse Berlin players to develop the area as a place for culture, education, social affairs and integrated housing.
Together with the department for Urban Development and Housing and the Mitte District Office, the alliance is now realising aforementioned places, as well as a new city hall for Mitte and administration offices in the old and a new building with a total amount of 65.000 sqm.
The exhibition shows the beginning of the project and documents the urbanistic planning process, but also provides an outlook on future developments. At the same time the exhibition marks the start of the artistic prototypes that will visually culminate during Berlin Art Week in September, for instance with the choir ›Voices—Chor der Statistik‹ run by Bernadette La Hengst. From 7 AUG the choir is meeting once a week for rehearsals singing utopian songs about the future of the city, about neighborliness and the area around the complex. The lettering on top of the roof already announces this new beginning: ›Alltogether Sifferent Square‹
