The Berlin Art Prize nominees have been announced! Out of over 700 candidates the jury chose nine artists who are as diverse as exciting. The nominees are: Esteban Rivera Ariza, Musquiqui Chihying, Marianna Christofides, Larissa Fassler, Ada Van Hoorebeke, Wieland Schönfelder, Agnes Scherer, Joshua Schwebel and Min-Wei Ting. Their works represent a variety of artistic disciplines, ranging from installation to performances and from video art to sculptures.
Since its founding year in 2013, the Berlin Art Prize has established an alternative to existing art prizes. Its special awarding procedure takes neither names nor commercial values of the candidates into consideration, the application procedure is anonymous. This allows equal opportunities, and decisions that are independent from the mechanisms of the art world. Eligible for the competition are all Berlin artists.
The nominated artists will be shown in September during Berlin Art Week in nine different project spaces across the city: gr_und, Very, Display, SMAC, Kinderhook & Caracas, Ashley, Horse & Pony, Kreuzberg Pavillon and The Institute for Endotic Research (TIER). The cooperation with the project spaces shines a light on the independent art scene and invites the audience to discover an even broader spectrum of art. The exhibitions of the nine nominees will open on 30 /31 AUG.
On 14 SEP, during Berlin Art Week 2019, three winners will be chosen. They will receive a trophy designed by artist Saâdane Afif, as well as prize money. Additionally the winners are invited to an artist residency in the project space 80121 Napoli in Italy. The midnight ceremony will take place at Flutgraben e.V. All art enthusiasts are invited to celebrate together with the nominees and award winners until the early morning.
