The shortlist for the VBKI-PREIS BERLINER GALERIEN 2019 has been announced. The nominees for the award of 10.000 Euros are Berlin galleries KWADRAT from Kreuzberg, GALERIE BURSTER from Wilmersdorf, KATHARINA MARIA RAAB from Tiergarten and SCHWARZ CONTEMPORARY from Neukölln.

In early September, gallerist MARTIN KWADE will open his new space in a converted garden house in Kreuzberg with an exhibition of artist Tobias Dostal. The artist, who will have a second exhibition at Berlin Art Week partner HAUS AM LÜTZOWPLATZ as well, will develop an immersive tunnel of 200 chrystals inviting visitors to walk through and experience magic reflections.

During Berlin Art Week GALERIE BURSTER dedicates its exhibition space to the next generation of artists. Their exhibitions series “on view” - which runs since 2017 – shows students of the master classes of UdK. This fall, the students of German artist and professor Manfred Pernice will have the opportunity to present their works to a major audience.

KATHARINA MARIA RAAB is already nominated for a second time. This time, she applied with an exhibition of maroccan artist Fatiha Zemmouri – her first one in Germany. Zemmouri is planning an installation that refers to the “Kongo Conference”, which took place in Berlin in 1884 and which resulted in the division of Africa.

Neukölln gallery SCHWARZ CONTEMPORARY – nominated for a second time as well – will show an exhibition of photo and video artist Jenna Westra. The photographic works of the New York-based artist show the female body as an object in fragmented environments and isolated interactions.

The VBKI-PREIS BERLINER GALERIEN is awarded by the Berlin gallery association lvbg and the association of Berlin merchants and industrials since 2017. For the first time four galleries have been selected from their application for a presentation during Berlin Art Week by an expert jury. The jury includes Tagesspiegel-journalist und art market expert Nicola Kuhn, artistic director of Kindl – Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst Andreas Fiedler, director of the association of German business women Claudia Große-Leege and gallerist and last year winner DANIEL MARZONA.

The award ceremony will take place on September 13, 2019.
