Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca work in the realms of film and photography. Their works reveal documentary and fictional aspects. The people portrayed are very much involved in planning and making their films, serving as authors of the screenplay and as actors and performers. Genres of popular music and their identificatory function for various social groups and their self-depiction are integral components of the artist duo’s research. With rhythm, song texts, and dance, in their films Wagner and de Burca negotiate aspects of visibility, prejudice, and apparently marginal cultural phenomena that have a great significance in the lives of people.
At the IBB video space at Berlinische Galerie, they will present their work ›Swinguerra‹ from 2019. This film was produced in collaboration with dance groups from the outskirts of Recife, a city remote from economic and political power in northeast Brazil. A rich local scene of popular music, which stretches from traditions of festive and religious African rituals to the inclusion of American pop influences, is presented here in an exemplary way using three styles of music and dance: swingueira, brega funk, and passinho do maloka.
